Description
Anteriorly oriented, the male elbow (cubitus) is represented at the distal humerus articulating with the proximal ulna and radius, centering on the humeroulnar joint between the trochlea and trochlear notch and the humeroradial joint at the capitulum and radial head. Articular cartilage loss is suggested along the anterior distal humeral surface and the proximal ulna, with irregular joint margins consistent with erosive change. Medially, the epicondylar region and ulnohumeral contour frame the joint line; laterally, the radial head sits inferior to the capitulum at the lateral margin of the articulation. Arthritis at the elbow matters because even modest cartilage wear or inflammatory synovitis can quickly translate into painful loss of terminal extension and forearm rotation, given the tight congruency of the trochlea within the trochlear notch and the limited capsular volume anteriorly. Osteophyte formation and marginal erosions at the coronoid process and trochlea are classic mechanical blocks in primary osteoarthritis and post-traumatic arthrosis, while more diffuse, punched-out erosions raise concern for rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthropathies. This anterior view also aligns with where clinicians localize anterior joint-line tenderness, assess flexion contracture, and plan debridement for osteocapsular impingement. Orthopedic and rheumatology teaching files use this perspective to explain why elbow arthritis often presents as extension loss first, and to distinguish humeroulnar from humeroradial involvement when correlating with radiographs, CT arthrography, or intraoperative findings.
