Description
Anterior orientation places the esophagus descending from the pharyngeal region through the thorax to the stomach in the left upper quadrant, with the gastroesophageal junction just inferior to the diaphragm. Right-sided dominance of the liver is clear, its inferior margin overlying the stomach and proximal duodenum, with the gallbladder expected on the visceral surface near the right costal margin. Below, jejunal and ileal loops fill the central abdomen, while the large intestine frames them, ascending colon on the child’s right, transverse colon superiorly, and descending and sigmoid segments to the left and inferiorly toward the pelvis. Mesenteric contour and organ overlap read naturally through the semi-transparent body wall. This full-length alimentary tract view matters because pediatric abdominal anatomy is not just a smaller adult pattern, the relative size of the liver and the higher position of upper abdominal viscera change surface projections and physical exam expectations.
