Centered on a standing adult female in anatomical position, the alimentary canal is traced from the oral cavity through the pharynx into the esophagus, descending in the midline and passing through the diaphragm to enter the stomach in the left upper quadrant. Superior and to the right, the liver occupies the right hypochondrium with the gallbladder tucked on its visceral surface, while the pancreas sits retroperitoneally, posterior to the stomach and extending toward the spleen. Coils of jejunum and ileum fill the central and lower abdomen, framed peripherally by the large intestine, with the ascending colon on the right, transverse colon crossing superiorly, descending colon on the left, and sigmoid colon curving toward the midline pelvis. Skin and superficial contours remain visible through a semi-transparent body wall.
