Running through the mid-sagittal plane of the male head and neck, the ethmoid bone is identified at the anterior cranial base between the frontal bone superiorly and the nasal cavity inferiorly. The cribriform plate forms the horizontal roof of the nasal cavity and floor of the anterior cranial fossa, while the perpendicular plate descends in the midline to contribute to the superior bony nasal septum, continuous inferiorly with the vomer and septal cartilage. Adjacent midline relationships are also apparent, including the hard palate of the maxilla and palatine bones anterior-inferiorly and the body of the sphenoid posteriorly at the chondrocranium. Surrounding context in the section includes the mandible with dentition, the upper cervical vertebrae posteriorly, and a detached hyoid bone inferior to the oral cavity. Cribriform plate anatomy matters because it is the weak point between sinonasal and intracranial compartments, and it is the common source of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea after anterior skull base trauma or endoscopic sinus surgery. Olfactory fila traverse the cribriform foramina from the olfactory mucosa to the olfactory bulb on the superior surface, so fractures here can produce anosmia and, when the dura is violated, meningitis. The perpendicular plate provides a clean teaching reference for midline septal deviation and for understanding how septoplasty relates to the ethmoid-vomer junction.
