Description
Across the distal forearm, the adult male wrist (carpus) is presented as a surface anatomy study centered on the radiocarpal and midcarpal regions. Palmar landmarks logically include the thenar and hypothenar eminences framing the carpal tunnel axis, with the palmar creases and the course of the flexor tendons oriented longitudinally toward the digits. Dorsally, the extensor tendon contours cross the joint toward the metacarpals, with the radial styloid lying lateral and the ulnar styloid medial as palpable bony references that bracket the carpal region. Functionally, the wrist’s apparent flexibility comes from coordinated motion at the radiocarpal joint and midcarpal joint, constrained by the distal radius and ulna and stabilized by the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) on the ulnar side. Clinically, this is the level at which scaphoid tenderness in the anatomic snuffbox raises concern for occult fracture, and where focal dorsal swelling over the scapholunate interval suggests a dorsal ganglion or scapholunate ligament injury after a fall on an outstretched hand. Small distances matter. Even subtle changes in tendon prominence or ulnar-sided contour can hint at extensor carpi ulnaris tendinopathy, De Quervain tenosynovitis at the radial styloid, or post-traumatic instability that becomes more apparent in wrist flexion and extension.
