Description
Running superficially across the lateral cervical region, the external jugular vein descends from its commencement near the angle of the mandible, where the posterior division of the retromandibular vein typically joins the posterior auricular vein. It then courses inferiorly, superficial to the sternocleidomastoid, trending from a more superior and posterior position beneath the auricle toward a more anterior and inferior position as it approaches the root of the neck. Along its path, smaller tributaries are commonly represented, including the transverse cervical, suprascapular, and anterior jugular veins, while deeper and more medial structures such as the internal jugular vein and common carotid artery sit within the carotid sheath. Because the external jugular vein lies in the superficial fascia, it offers a direct teaching example of the layered organization of the neck and the difference between superficial venous drainage and the deeper internal jugular system that carries the bulk of intracranial outflow.
