Description
Seen in lateral profile, the female epicranium is organized around the epicranius (occipitofrontalis) with its frontal belly anteriorly over the forehead and its occipital belly posteriorly over the occiput, linked by the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica) spanning the vertex. Superficial to the calvaria, the scalp drapes from the supraorbital region toward the nuchal area, crossing the temporal line where the temporoparietal fascia continues inferiorly toward the auricle. Adjacent landmarks typically include the lateral orbital rim, zygomatic arch, and the auricular region, where the anterior and superior auricular muscles sit superficial to the mastoid and temporal fascia. Lateral scalp anatomy matters because the galea-aponeurosis complex defines how forces and fluid spread across the cranial vault. A laceration that violates the epicranial aponeurosis can gape widely due to tension from the frontal and occipital bellies, and bleeding from scalp vessels can be brisk because the dense connective tissue layer tethers vascular walls open. Subgaleal hematoma tracks in the loose areolar plane deep to the galea, often extending across the midline and posteriorly, while superficial temporal artery courses just anterior to the ear in the temporoparietal fascia and becomes a key landmark in temporal artery biopsy for suspected giant cell arteritis.
