Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the female frontal region spans the forehead (sinciput) from the anterior hairline superiorly to the superciliary region and supraorbital margin inferiorly, blending posteriorly into the temporal fossa at the superior temporal line. The frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis lies superficial to the frontal bone, with the frontonasal contour at the glabella transitioning laterally toward the lateral orbital rim. Across the brow, the skin and subcutaneous tissue overlie the corrugator supercilii and procerus medially, while the frontalis fibers thin as they approach the temporal region. Surface landmarks dominate. Clinically, this lateral perspective helps you teach the layered anatomy that governs both expression and risk: the frontal branch of the facial nerve courses within the temporoparietal fascia as it crosses toward the frontalis, making it vulnerable during temporal incisions and rhytidectomy dissection. Palpation and landmarking around the supraorbital rim guide supraorbital and supratrochlear nerve blocks for forehead laceration repair, and the degree of brow elevation relates directly to frontalis tone, compensatory activation, and patterns of horizontal rhytids targeted with botulinum toxin. Frontal sinus boundaries are not directly visible, but the forehead contour and supraorbital ridge are reliable teaching anchors for correlating surface anatomy with sinus disease, trauma, and imaging. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy courses to reinforce surface landmarks, in facial aesthetics training materials when discussing frontalis injection maps and brow ptosis, and in emergency medicine or plastic surgery references addressing forehead wounds and regional anesthesia.
