Description
Centered in an anterior pediatric figure, the thoracic viscera sit deep to the pectoralis major and anterior thoracic wall, with the thymus (when present for age) and mediastinal contours framing the heart between the lungs. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant, the stomach and spleen lie to the left, and small and large bowel loops fill the central abdomen, while the paired kidneys remain posterior and largely retroperitoneal relative to the peritoneal cavity. In the pelvis, the urinary bladder sits midline and anterior, with a small prepubertal uterus posterior to it and the ovaries positioned more laterally along the pelvic brim. Superficial veins and peripheral nerves track along the limbs over layered musculature, reinforcing the ventral arrangement from skin inward. For teaching normal pediatric anatomy, an anterior whole-body organ map matters because proportions differ from adults: the liver extends more inferiorly, the thoracic cavity is relatively smaller, and pelvic reproductive organs are present but diminutive in a female child. This is the setup you need when explaining pediatric physical exam findings and why organomegaly, diaphragmatic hernia, or bowel malrotation changes expected contour and percussion landmarks. It also supports orientation for procedures that rely on surface anatomy, from chest tube placement (avoiding internal mammary vessels) to suprapubic bladder access.
