Description

Centered within a frontal skeletal framework, the female thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera are positioned relative to the rib cage, sternum, vertebral column, and pelvis. Superiorly, the trachea descends in the midline toward the lungs, while the heart sits slightly left of the median plane, posterior to the sternum and between the costal margins. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant beneath the lower ribs, with the stomach and spleen lying more superior and lateral on the left, and loops of small intestine framed peripherally by the large intestine. In the lesser pelvis, the urinary bladder rests anterior and inferior, with the uterus typically posterior to the bladder and anterior to the rectum; ovaries sit laterally near the pelvic brim. Orientation like this matters when teaching how organs relate to bony landmarks and surface anatomy, because those relationships drive both physical exam findings and cross-sectional imaging interpretation. Emergency trauma assessment leans on the same map: lower rib fractures raise suspicion for splenic injury on the left or hepatic laceration on the right, and pelvic ring disruption can threaten the bladder and urethra. Expect some organs, such as the kidneys and pancreas, to be underrepresented anteriorly, since their primary position is retroperitoneal and posterior. Use this plate for gross anatomy lectures on viscera, introductory radiology modules that bridge to AP projection reasoning, and medical publishing spreads that need a clean reference for female organ topography within the trunk. It also supports patient education when explaining abdominal pain localization, appendicitis differentials, or why pelvic procedures must account for bladder and uterine position.
