Description
Emerging fetal anatomy at approximately gestational week 8 is presented without the amniotic sac, leaving the conceptus and its attachments unobscured. A disproportionately large cranial region dominates superiorly, with facial primordia visible on the anterior aspect, while the trunk tapers inferiorly toward the caudal eminence. Upper and lower limb buds project laterally, the hand plates lying distal to the forearm segments with early digital rays, and the foot plates positioned distal to the legs. Adjacent to the ventral body wall, a spherical yolk sac connects via the vitelline duct, and a forming umbilical cord courses from the embryo toward the placenta. Week 8 marks the transition from embryo to fetus in many teaching frameworks, because the basic body plan and major organ primordia are established even though growth and refinement dominate thereafter. Removal of the amniotic sac makes it easier to appreciate extraembryonic anatomy that clinicians discuss but trainees often struggle to visualize, including the relationship of the yolk sac and early umbilical cord to the ventral body wall. This is the window when failure of normal midgut herniation and return, or persistence of the vitelline duct, sets up anomalies such as Meckel diverticulum and omphalomesenteric fistula.
