Along the dorsal aspect, segmented somites form a bead-like series flanking the midline and continuing caudally toward the tail bud. Paired upper and lower limb buds project laterally from the body wall, the cranial buds positioned superior and slightly anterior to the caudal buds, reflecting the early proximodistal patterning of the appendicular skeleton. Timing matters here. Around week six, the rapid remodeling of the cranial region and paraxial mesoderm sets the template for vertebral segmentation and rib primordia, and it is also the window when failures of neural tube closure are classically discussed in embryology and teratology teaching.
