Description
Centered on the anterior elbow, the cubital fossa appears as a shallow triangular depression bordered laterally by the brachioradialis and medially by the pronator teres, with the biceps brachii tendon descending centrally toward the radial tuberosity. Superficial veins course across this region, most often the cephalic vein laterally and basilic vein medially with the median cubital vein bridging them in the subcutaneous tissue. Deep to the bicipital aponeurosis, the brachial artery lies medial to the tendon and divides near the inferior aspect of the fossa into the radial and ulnar arteries, while the median nerve tracks alongside the artery and the radial nerve runs more laterally beneath brachioradialis. Blue circumferential bands proximal to the elbows read as tourniquets placed above the venipuncture field. Clinically, the anterior elbow is where anatomy and routine procedure collide, because the median cubital vein is commonly selected for phlebotomy while the brachial artery and median nerve sit just deep, separated only by fascia and the bicipital aponeurosis. Misplaced needles can puncture the brachial artery or irritate the median nerve, and a high bifurcation of the brachial artery or a superficial ulnar artery changes the expected relationship in ways that matter during cannulation. Palpation landmarks help. The medial and lateral epicondyles frame the fossa, while the olecranon, though posterior, anchors elbow orientation when teaching surface anatomy.
