Across the anterior compartment, the quadriceps femoris mass occupies the central and lateral thigh, with rectus femoris superficial and central, vastus lateralis forming the lateral contour, and vastus medialis bulking medially just proximal to the knee. Medial to the rectus femoris, the femoral triangle region lies inferior to the inguinal ligament, where the femoral neurovascular bundle courses from lateral to medial as femoral nerve, femoral artery, and femoral vein, with the great saphenous vein joining the femoral vein at the saphenofemoral junction.
