Description
Anterior male upper torso anatomy is rendered with the rib cage and shoulder girdle as the bony framework, including the clavicles, sternum, costal cartilages, ribs, and the lateral scapular contour beneath the superficial planes. Overlying the thorax, pectoralis major spans from the medial clavicle and sternum to its humeral insertion, while the deltoid caps the glenohumeral region laterally. Between adjacent ribs, external and internal intercostal muscle layers occupy the intercostal spaces, and superiorly the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process toward the manubrium and medial clavicle, with trapezius fibers seen posterolaterally at the base of the neck. Inferiorly, the diaphragm sits deep to the costal margin, separating thoracic and abdominal compartments. Emphasis on the deep chest wall matters because this is where mechanics become clinically testable: intercostal fiber direction explains rib elevation and depression in forced ventilation, and the diaphragm’s domes and costal attachments account for paradoxical motion with phrenic nerve palsy. Intercostal neurovascular bundles run in the costal groove along the inferior border of each rib, so thoracostomy and intercostal nerve blocks target the superior margin of the rib below to avoid iatrogenic injury.
