Description

Spanning the lateral shoulder in posterior view, the deltoid muscle forms a thick cap from the lateral third of the clavicle, acromion, and spine of the scapula to its insertion on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. Posterior fibers descend inferolaterally from the scapular spine, lying superficial to the infraspinatus and teres minor in the infraspinous region and blending anteriorly with the deltopectoral contour over the proximal arm. The scapular spine sits just medial to the deltoid’s posterior origin, while the acromion marks the superolateral roof of the glenohumeral joint. Big surface anatomy. This posterior shoulder view matters because it clarifies the relationship between the deltoid and the rotator cuff interval behind it, a frequent point of confusion when teaching abduction mechanics and the coupling of the deltoid with supraspinatus to prevent superior translation of the humeral head. Clinically, the posterior deltoid’s origin along the scapular spine is a palpable landmark when mapping the course of the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery as they pass through the quadrangular space deep to the deltoid, a region at risk during posterior shoulder approaches and in quadrangular space syndrome. Use it for gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching modules on shoulder abduction, extension, and horizontal abduction, or for orthopedics and sports medicine materials covering deltoid strain patterns, rotator cuff tears, and safe injection practice around the shoulder girdle. It also fits surgical education content introducing posterior deltoid-splitting approaches and incision planning relative to the acromion and scapular spine. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
