Description

Sagittal section through the adult female breast, with the nipple and areola forming the anterior landmark and the pectoral fascia and anterior thoracic wall lying posteriorly. Lobules of the mammary gland sit within abundant adipose tissue, while lactiferous ducts converge anteriorly toward the nipple in a radial pattern. Fibrous septa (Cooper ligaments) course from the dermis to deeper fascia, partitioning fat and glandular tissue and tethering the skin. Sagittal anatomy is the teaching view for how breast parenchyma relates to the retroareolar region and to the deep fascia, the planes exploited in mastectomy and implant pocket dissection. Ductal anatomy also explains the clinical emphasis on the subareolar complex, where duct ectasia and periductal mastitis often present and where nipple discharge is assessed. Skin tethering by Cooper ligaments provides a direct structural basis for dimpling and retraction seen with invasive carcinoma, while the depicted vascular and lymphatic channels support discussion of axillary nodal spread and edema. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and surface anatomy instruction, breast surgery and oncology teaching files, and medical publishing where a clean, labeled sagittal cross section clarifies the relationship between lobules, ducts, fat, and suspensory ligaments. It also pairs well with mammography and breast ultrasound chapters when introducing retroareolar ductal anatomy and the prepectoral versus subpectoral surgical planes. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
