Description
Oriented in standard anatomical position, the female pelvis and proximal femora are presented from an anterior perspective, with the iliac crests flaring laterally and the anterior superior iliac spines marking the anterior margin of each ilium. Inferior to the iliac fossae, the acetabula sit lateral to the pubic bodies, while the pubic symphysis forms the midline articulation and the superior pubic rami sweep superolaterally toward each acetabulum. The femoral heads lie medial to the greater trochanters, and the femoral necks angle inferolaterally toward the shafts, creating the familiar relationship between the hip joint and the proximal femur. A wider subpubic angle is apparent. Anterior hip morphology is not just a teaching point for sexual dimorphism, it directly frames common clinical problems and how clinicians plan access to the joint. Developmental dysplasia of the hip and acetabular undercoverage are often discussed with emphasis on the anterior acetabular rim and femoral head containment, and this orientation mirrors what you consider when correlating physical exam findings with AP pelvis radiographs and cross-sectional imaging.
