Description

Seen in lateral profile, the female collum is defined by the cervical vertebral column posteriorly and the anterior neck soft tissues that contour from the mandible to the thoracic inlet. Superiorly, the hyoid region sits beneath the submandibular area, while the laryngeal prominence and cricoid level fall inferior to it along the midline; the tracheal column tracks anterior to the cervical spine, with the esophageal corridor positioned posterior to the trachea. Laterally, the sternocleidomastoid outlines the carotid triangle, separating the anterior cervical compartment from the posterior triangle that slopes toward the trapezius and nuchal musculature. A clean side view of the cervical region matters because it teaches surface anatomy in the exact orientation used at the bedside, where you palpate the hyoid, locate the thyroid cartilage and cricothyroid membrane, and estimate cervical levels relative to the jawline. Airway procedures hinge on this. Cricothyrotomy is performed through the membrane between thyroid and cricoid cartilages, and neck extension at the atlanto-occipital and lower cervical joints changes that relationship and the apparent depth of the anterior airway. The same landmarks guide evaluation of cervical lymphadenopathy along the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid and inform incision planning for a transverse collar (Kocher) approach to the thyroid. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching for the cervical spine and anterior neck, in clinical skills labs covering airway landmarking, and in surgical or anesthesia publications that need a neutral reference for neck surface anatomy in women.
