Description

Seen in lateral profile, the female shoulder girdle is defined by the acromion process forming the superior roof of the joint, with the distal clavicle meeting it at the acromioclavicular articulation. Deep to the rounded deltoid contour, the humeral head sits lateral to the glenoid cavity of the scapula, creating the glenohumeral joint line. The deltoid wraps from the lateral clavicle, acromion, and spine of the scapula to its insertion on the deltoid tuberosity, framing the proximal humerus in a smooth superficial arc. A lateral shoulder view makes the subacromial space legible, the corridor between the acromion and the greater tubercle where the supraspinatus tendon and subacromial bursa run and where impingement symptoms commonly localize. It also clarifies why acromioclavicular joint sprains create superior step-off at the distal clavicle, while anterior glenohumeral instability tends to translate the humeral head anteroinferiorly relative to the glenoid. Small distances, big consequences. Use this artwork for gross anatomy teaching in upper-limb and shoulder-girdle modules, for orthopaedic and sports medicine texts covering impingement and rotator cuff disease, and for patient-facing clinic materials explaining acromioclavicular separation versus glenohumeral dislocation from a side view.
