Description
Seen in lateral profile with a parasagittal cut, the cranial cavity opens to the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem superior to the nasopharynx and oropharynx, while the nasal cavity lies anterior to the sphenoid region and hard palate. Posterior to the nasal cavity, the pharyngeal airway continues inferiorly toward the larynx and proximal trachea, with the tongue occupying the oral cavity anteriorly and the epiglottic region marking the laryngeal inlet. Superficial and deep facial musculature is layered over the maxilla and mandible, and major neurovascular bundles course vertically in the neck, with the carotid system positioned medial to the internal jugular vein and the vagus nerve between them within the carotid sheath. Salivary tissue in the parotid and submandibular regions sits lateral and inferior to the mandible, and the temporal bone region frames the external, middle, and inner ear spaces. Lateral sectional anatomy of the head and neck is where airway, swallowing, and cranial nerve pathways intersect, so small spatial errors become teaching problems fast. The relationship of the tongue base to the soft palate and epiglottis maps directly to oropharyngeal airway obstruction and to the line of sight required in direct laryngoscopy.
