Rendered in lateral profile, the cranium is opened to reveal the cerebral hemispheres with prominent gyri and sulci, overlaid by superficial cortical vessels and larger intracranial arteries and veins. Cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem and track anteriorly and inferiorly toward the orbit, nasal cavity, oral cavity, and neck, while the muscles of facial expression and the mandible sit superficial and anterior to the pharyngeal airway. Posteriorly, the external ear frames the temporal region, with the course of cervical vessels descending inferiorly in the carotid sheath toward the thoracic inlet. A lateral head dissection view is where neurovascular relationships become teachable in one glance, because the arterial supply to the brain can be read against the skull base and the exit points of the cranial nerves. Clinically, it supports discussion of carotid artery disease and stroke pathways, and it also helps when explaining why lesions near the cerebellopontine angle can present with hearing loss, vertigo, and facial weakness (vestibular schwannoma involving CN VIII with CN VII proximity).
