Description
Presented in left lateral view, the male child’s body wall is partially removed to expose layered musculature over the rib cage and abdominal wall while the thoracic viscera sit deep to the sternum and costal cartilages. The left lung occupies the lateral hemithorax, its apex extending superior to the first rib, with the heart positioned medial and slightly anterior within the mediastinum and the great vessels coursing superiorly toward the neck. Inferiorly, the dome of the diaphragm forms the muscular floor of the thorax and separates the pleural cavities from the upper abdominal organs, which are suggested posterior and inferior to the costal margin. Superficial arteries and veins track along the upper limb and lower limb, aligned with the humerus, femur, and the long axes of the extremities. A lateral pediatric dissection view like this clarifies spatial relationships that are harder to teach from isolated organ plates, especially the anterior position of the right ventricle relative to the left and the way the pleural cavity wraps the lung laterally while sparing the mediastinum.
