Description
Posterior leg anatomy is organized around the triceps surae, with the medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius forming the superficial calf contours and converging inferiorly toward the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Deep to gastrocnemius, the broad soleus occupies the posterior compartment, its fibers running inferomedially to join the common tendon, while the slender plantaris (when present) tracks obliquely between the two layers. Proximally, gastrocnemius arises from the femoral condyles and frames the inferior margins of the popliteal fossa, where the midline interval can guide the eye to deeper neurovascular structures.
