Description
Presented in lateral profile within a full-body male skeleton, the os coxae is emphasized and resolves into its three fused components, ilium superiorly, ischium posteroinferiorly, and pubis anteroinferiorly, converging at the acetabulum on the lateral surface of the pelvis. The acetabular rim and socket depth sit lateral to the pelvic cavity, while the obturator foramen lies inferior and slightly anterior to the acetabulum. Posteriorly, the greater sciatic notch is suggested between the posterior inferior iliac spine and ischial spine, with the ischial tuberosity projecting inferiorly as a weight-bearing landmark. Adjacent long bones of the lower limb, including the proximal femur, align inferior to the acetabulum at the hip joint. Lateral views of the hip bones matter because acetabular orientation and pelvic landmarks govern hip stability and gait mechanics, and they are the reference points for interpreting radiographs and CT reconstructions of the pelvis. Trauma patterns often hinge on these relationships, from posterior hip dislocation impacting the posterior acetabular wall to fractures involving the acetabular columns that disrupt congruence of the femoral head within the socket.
