Description
Skeletal muscles of the superficial layer span from the cervical region to the dorsum of the foot in a full-body figure placed in anatomical position. Prominent in the upper limb are the deltoid capping the lateral shoulder, pectoralis major covering the anterior thoracic wall, and biceps brachii lying anterior to the humerus and proximal to the antecubital fossa, with the forearm flexor mass continuing distally toward the carpal region. Along the trunk, rectus abdominis runs vertically on either side of the linea alba, while external oblique forms the anterolateral abdominal wall with inferomedial fiber direction toward the iliac crest. In the lower limb, sartorius crosses obliquely from the anterior superior iliac spine to the medial knee, quadriceps femoris dominates the anterior thigh (rectus femoris centrally, vastus medialis and lateralis flanking), and tibialis anterior occupies the anterolateral compartment of the leg as it approaches the medial dorsum of the foot. Major landmarks are easy to orient. Surface myology matters when you need to connect function and palpable anatomy to injury patterns and procedural access, and this illustration supports that translation by keeping muscle bellies and tendon transitions visually distinct. Rectus femoris and adductor region strain patterns in sprinting, biceps brachii and distal tendon pain near the radial tuberosity, and anterior compartment pathology of the leg (including exertional compartment syndrome affecting tibialis anterior) all become easier to teach when borders and fiber direction are unambiguous in a single fixed viewpoint.
