Description
Hypothalamic sulcus marks the junction between thalamus superiorly and hypothalamus inferiorly along the lateral wall of the third ventricle. From a fixed lateral perspective, the shallow groove tracks an anteroposterior course on the diencephalic surface that forms the ventricle’s side wall, providing a visible line of separation between dorsal thalamic contours above and the more ventral hypothalamic region below. The relationship to the third ventricle is explicit. In many specimens, the sulcus aligns roughly from the region of the interventricular foramen (foramen of Monro) toward the cerebral aqueduct, anchoring orientation when you are teaching ventricular boundaries.
