Description
Presented in a lateral, semi-transparent rendering of the male mandible, the inferior alveolar nerve is traced as it enters the mandibular foramen on the medial surface of the ramus and runs anteriorly within the mandibular canal deep to the apices of the molar and premolar roots. Along its course the nerve remains inferior to the tooth sockets, then approaches the buccal cortex and exits at the mental foramen as the mental nerve to supply the lower lip and chin. The mandibular body, ramus, and angle provide bony landmarks, while the dentition and root morphology clarify the nerve’s proximity to the posterior teeth. Spatially, the canal lies inferior to the alveolar process and anterior to the mandibular angle as it courses toward the premolar region. Lateral visualization of the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle matters because most iatrogenic injuries occur where clinicians work blind, within bone. This view maps the corridor relevant to an inferior alveolar nerve block near the mandibular foramen, and it also explains why third molar extraction, sagittal split ramus osteotomy, and implant placement in the posterior mandible can produce postoperative paresthesia when the canal is high, the cortex is thin, or the mental foramen sits close to the planned osteotomy or fixture.
