Description

Rotating in anterior orientation, the animation isolates the inferior articular process (processus articularis inferior) of a typical thoracic vertebra as it descends from the junction of lamina and pedicle on the vertebral arch. Medially, the vertebral foramen and posterior aspect of the vertebral body sit behind the process, while laterally the transverse process and costotransverse region frame the posterior thoracic cage interface. The inferior articular facet (facies articularis inferior) becomes the focal surface as the sequence clarifies how it faces anteromedially in the thoracic region, in contrast to the more sagittal orientation familiar from the lumbar spine. Facet geometry drives thoracic motion, and this animation makes that spatial logic easy to teach: the inferior articular process of the superior vertebra glides on the superior articular process of the vertebra below to form the zygapophysial (facet) joint. Small changes in facet orientation along T1 to T12 explain why axial rotation is favored in mid thoracic segments while flexion and extension remain limited by the rib cage and overlapping spinous processes. Degenerative facet arthropathy at these joints can refer pain to the paraspinal region and posterior chest wall, and accurate identification of the inferior articular process matters during fluoroscopy guided medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation targeting the facet joint capsule innervation. Use this clip in gross anatomy labs to orient learners to vertebral arch landmarks, or in radiology and pain medicine teaching to correlate an anterior bony view with oblique CT reconstructions and needle trajectories to the thoracic zygapophysial joints. It also fits well in surgical education when discussing posterior approaches that navigate between lamina, pars interarticularis, and facet complex. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
