Seen from below, the paired geniohyoid muscles lie immediately superior to the mylohyoid and run in the midline floor of mouth from the inferior genial tubercles (mental spines) of the mandible anteriorly to the body of the hyoid posteriorly. Their right and left bellies sit medial to the anterior bellies of the digastric and superficial to the genioglossus, forming a narrow muscular band between the mandibular symphysis and the hyoid. Superior to the hyoid, the geniohyoid helps define the submental region and the anterior boundary of the suprahyoid neck. This inferior perspective matters because it clarifies how a small suprahyoid muscle can translate mandibular and hyoid movement into functional changes in swallowing and airway caliber.
