Description

Rotating through an inferior perspective, the animation isolates the talar neck as it spans anteriorly from the talar body toward the talar head, narrowing into a bony bridge between the ankle mortise and the navicular. The sulcus tali is tracked as a deep plantar groove running obliquely across the neck, positioned between the medial and lateral talar processes and continuous posteriorly with the sulcus on the talar body. As the sequence advances, the neck’s plantar surface is read in relation to the subtalar joint beneath it, with the articular contours for the posterior facet of the calcaneus appearing posterior to the neck and the head’s anterior articular surface turning toward the talonavicular joint. Clinically, the talar neck is the weak link in talar trauma, and its inferior morphology helps explain why neck fractures can disrupt subtalar congruity and endanger the talar body’s vascularity through injury to branches of the artery of the tarsal canal and tarsal sinus. The animated sweep across the sulcus tali clarifies how this groove, together with the calcaneal sulcus, forms the sinus tarsi, a common pain generator in lateral hindfoot sprain and a corridor for arthroscopic subtalar and sinus tarsi procedures. Small contours matter here. Use this asset for lower limb osteology teaching (podiatry, orthopaedics, anatomy lab), for figure support in talar neck fracture classifications and reduction strategies, or as an orientation clip in subtalar arthroscopy and sinus tarsi debridement education. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
