Description
Centered inferior to the clavicle, the infraclavicular fossa forms a shallow depression in the anterior shoulder girdle between the inferior border of the clavicle superiorly and the upper fibers of pectoralis major medially, with the deltoid contour defining the lateral margin. The deltopectoral groove tracks inferolaterally from this region, marking the interval between pectoralis major and deltoid and often aligning with the course of the cephalic vein as it pierces the clavipectoral fascia. Superficial landmarks such as the jugular notch and sternal end of the clavicle provide medial orientation, while the acromial end of the clavicle and anterior axillary fold sit more laterally and inferiorly. Skin tone and surface topography are rendered to match a Black adult female subject. For procedural anatomy, this surface depression is where you triangulate access to deeper neurovascular structures without seeing them: the axillary vein transitions to the subclavian vein posterior to the clavicle, and the cords of the brachial plexus lie deep to pectoralis minor near the coracoid process. Palpation and landmarking here matter for infraclavicular brachial plexus block, subclavian or axillary venous cannulation, and planning the skin incision for infraclavicular pacemaker or port placement, where small shifts in position change the relationship to pleura and the risk of pneumothorax. Landmarks matter.
