Skin forms the body’s exterior organ system, and this illustration frames its layered architecture from superficial epidermis to deeper dermis and subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis). The epidermis is presented as the outermost barrier with recognizable stratification, while the dermis lies immediately deep to it and is thickened to accommodate vascular and neural supply. Arrector pili muscles attach obliquely from the follicle toward the superficial dermis, and the surface contour suggests sites where pores, hair shafts, and nail plates may be referenced in relation to the epidermal surface. Barrier function and thermoregulation come into focus when these relationships are held in one fixed frame: the avascular epidermis depends on diffusion from the vascular dermis, and appendageal structures create predictable pathways for inflammation and infection. Clinical teaching benefits from seeing where pathology lives, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis localize to epidermis and superficial dermis, hidradenitis suppurativa tracks through follicular units and apocrine-bearing regions, and melanocytic lesions arise at the epidermal basal layer where surgical margins matter. Burns and graft planning also hinge on depth, with partial-thickness injury sparing adnexal structures that support re-epithelialization, while full-thickness injury destroys follicles and glands. Depth matters.
