Description
Centered on the palmar interdigital web spaces, the hand is presented with the digits slightly abducted so the skin folds between adjacent fingers are clearly separated. Distally, each web space tapers toward the bases of the proximal phalanges, while proximally it opens over the metacarpophalangeal region where the palmar skin transitions from the central palm to the digital pads. Blue markings concentrate at the proximal margin of the webs, a logical location for teaching the superficial transverse metacarpal (natatory) ligament and the course of the common palmar digital nerves and arteries as they divide into proper digital branches along the radial and ulnar sides of each finger. Orientation is clear. For clinical work, the palmar web spaces matter because they define functional finger abduction and the depth at which contracture begins to limit grasp and pinch. Burn scar contracture and post-traumatic webbing commonly shorten the commissures, so surgeons planning Z-plasty or local flap release reference the natural apex of each web and the relationship to the metacarpophalangeal crease. The same region guides safe incision placement and local anesthetic for a digital nerve block, avoiding the neurovascular bundles that run just lateral to each flexor tendon sheath and its A1 pulley near the finger base.
