Intergluteal Cleft

Description

Posterior trunk anatomy is presented with the intergluteal cleft (rima ani) running in the midline between the right and left gluteal regions of an adult Black female. The cleft overlies the sacrococcygeal junction, descending inferiorly toward the perineal region, while the convex contours lateral to it reflect the bulk and superficial outline of gluteus maximus. Superiorly, the cleft aligns with the median sacral area, and laterally the gluteal fold and proximal posterior thigh contours frame the inferior boundary of the buttock. Midline surface anatomy here matters because the intergluteal cleft is a common site for pilonidal disease, where hair and debris can drive chronic inflammation and abscess formation in the natal cleft just superior to the coccyx.
