Description
Prominent mucosa dominates the field, with straight, test tube shaped intestinal glands (crypts of Lieberkuhn) descending perpendicularly from the luminal surface into the lamina propria. Between crypts, the connective tissue core houses capillary networks and lymphatics, while a thin muscularis mucosae forms a distinct boundary inferiorly before the submucosa. Deeper still, the muscularis externa is organized into an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer, separated by the myenteric (Auerbach) plexus, with serosa at the periphery. No villi are present in the large intestine. That absence is diagnostic. Colon histology is easy to misread if you come in expecting small intestine architecture, so this internal organization is a teaching workhorse for distinguishing large bowel from ileum or jejunum. The deep crypts and goblet cell rich surface epithelium explain why the colon favors lubrication and water and electrolyte handling over nutrient absorption, and why inflammatory and neoplastic processes often center on the crypt compartment. Pathologists anchor diagnoses such as ulcerative colitis on cryptitis and crypt abscesses, and they grade adenomatous change by dysplasia arising from the glandular epithelium. Surgical margins and biopsy adequacy also hinge on recognizing whether submucosa and muscularis propria are included. Gastrointestinal histology courses, colon cancer screening materials, and endoscopy or colorectal surgery teaching sets use this view to connect mucosal microanatomy with biopsy interpretation and staging (mucosa vs submucosa vs muscularis propria).
