Description
Rendered in left lateral profile, the head and neck are opened to emphasize temporalis and masseter overlying the zygomatic arch and mandibular ramus, with the sternocleidomastoid running inferoanteriorly from mastoid process toward the clavicle and sternum and the trapezius lying more posteriorly. Superficial vessels track across these muscle planes: the facial artery ascends anteroinferior to the masseter along the mandibular margin, while the external jugular vein descends superficial to the sternocleidomastoid toward the root of the neck. Yellow nerve branches form a recognizable facial nerve plexus across the cheek and periauricular region, with cervical nerves extending inferiorly in the posterior triangle, and the auricle and external acoustic meatus sit lateral to deeper middle-ear elements. A lateral dissection like this earns its keep when you need to teach safe corridors and danger zones in the parotid and submandibular regions, where the facial nerve and facial vessels cross surgical fields that look deceptively simple on the surface. Traumatic lacerations at the mandibular border, parotidectomy planning, and iatrogenic facial nerve palsy discussions all benefit from seeing the nerve arborization in relation to the masseter and parotid area, while the external jugular vein provides a familiar landmark for central venous access pitfalls and neck trauma triage.
