Description

Layered anatomy of the head and upper neck in an adult Black woman is rendered with the skin and hair retained as a superficial envelope while deeper structures are selectively exposed. Laterally, the masseter sits over the mandibular ramus and blends superiorly toward the zygomatic arch, while the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, framing the anterior triangle. Medial and deep to this muscular plane, the carotid sheath region is suggested by the course of the common and internal carotid arteries with the internal jugular vein lateral to them, and yellow nerve pathways trace branches of the facial nerve across the cheek and along the mandibular margin. Clinical teaching often hinges on these spatial relationships: parotid surgery and facelift approaches must respect the facial nerve as it exits the stylomastoid foramen and fans anteriorly over the masseter, and even small errors can leave a patient with marginal mandibular weakness or incomplete eye closure. Carotid endarterectomy planning similarly depends on recognizing the internal jugular vein lateral to the carotid artery and anticipating nearby cranial nerves (hypoglossal, vagus), where traction injury or bleeding can complicate an otherwise routine exposure. Palpation landmarks become easier to explain when the masseter, mandibular border, and sternocleidomastoid are shown together. Orientation matters. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy curricula, dental and maxillofacial teaching modules on mastication and facial nerve branches, or surgical atlases covering parotidectomy, neck dissection, and vascular access in the carotid and jugular region. It also supports patient-facing education when discussing facial nerve risk, carotid stenosis workup, or neck mass evaluation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
