Description

Posteriorly oriented, full-length female anatomy is rendered with the axial skeleton as the framework, centering the vertebral column from cervical through sacral levels and the rib cage and pelvis as bony boundaries for the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic viscera. Within the thorax, the lungs flank the mediastinum on either side of the vertebral bodies, while inferiorly the diaphragm separates thoracic contents from upper abdominal organs. Below the costal margin, abdominal viscera are arranged around the retroperitoneum, and pelvic organs sit deep within the lesser pelvis, inferior to the sacral promontory and medial to the iliac bones. A color-coded neural network tracks the spinal cord within the vertebral canal and peripheral nerves coursing laterally through intercostal spaces and into the lumbosacral region. For teaching spatial anatomy, a posterior view forces attention onto relationships clinicians approach from behind: thoracic sympathetic chain adjacent to the vertebral column, intercostal neurovascular bundles running in the costal grooves, and lumbosacral plexus elements crossing the posterior pelvic brim. It is also the cleanest orientation to relate vertebral level to visceral referral patterns, such as upper abdominal pain referred to lower thoracic dermatomes or pelvic pain radiating along sacral nerve distributions. Posterior anatomy matters in the real world. It is where neuraxial procedures and many posterior surgical corridors begin.
