Description

Anterior frontal anatomy of a male child is rendered with the integument made translucent, exposing the major splanchnic viscera from the paranasal sinuses to the pelvic inlet. Superiorly, the nasal cavity and maxillary sinuses sit above the oropharynx, with the larynx and trachea descending in the midline, anterior to the cervical esophagus. Within the thorax, the right and left lungs flank a centrally placed heart whose apex points inferolaterally to the left, while the domes of the diaphragm form the inferior boundary and separate the pleural cavities from the abdominal organs below. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant, the stomach and spleen lie to the left, and loops of small intestine and the colon fill the central and lower abdomen with the kidneys positioned posteriorly in the upper abdomen. Pediatric proportions matter. In children the liver commonly extends farther inferiorly below the costal margin than in adults, and a relatively prominent thymus can overlap the superior mediastinum on an anterior view, a frequent source of confusion when correlating with chest radiography. This layout also supports teaching of congenital and acute abdominal conditions: malrotation with volvulus, intussusception, or appendicitis becomes easier to localize when the stomach, cecum, and small-bowel mesentery are mentally anchored to the midline vessels and the diaphragmatic level. Teaching files for gross anatomy, pediatric physiology, and introductory radiology can pair this plate with axial CT or ultrasound to reinforce organ position, laterality, and the concept of peritoneal versus retroperitoneal compartments.
