Description
Centered on the anterior knee region, the patella sits within the quadriceps tendon and overlies the distal femur at the level of the femoral trochlea, with the patellar ligament continuing inferiorly to the tibial tuberosity. Medially and laterally, the contour of the femoral epicondyles frames the joint line, while the tibial plateau lies inferior to the femoral condyles and transitions distally into the anterior border (shin) of the tibia. Superficial landmarks such as the infrapatellar fat pad region, the medial and lateral patellar retinacula, and the proximal tibia are implied by the highlighted band and neutral standing posture. Anterior knee views like this are often what clinicians and students anchor to before they learn what sits deep to the extensor mechanism, including the anterior cruciate ligament, menisci, and articular cartilage that are assessed indirectly when a patient presents with swelling, locking, or patellofemoral pain.
