Description

Lateral profiling of the male upper limb brings the biceps brachii into relief along the anterior compartment of the arm, lying superficial to the brachialis and spanning from the scapular region to the proximal forearm. Proximally, the long head tendon courses within the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus while the short head arises from the coracoid process, and distally the muscle belly narrows into a tendon inserting on the radial tuberosity with an aponeurotic expansion (bicipital aponeurosis) fanning medially into the forearm fascia. Posterior to this contour, the triceps brachii defines the posterior arm, and the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder superiorly. Clinically, this lateral view helps clarify why biceps contour changes with elbow flexion and forearm supination, and it supports teaching around distal biceps tendon rupture, where the tendon retracts proximally and produces the classic “Popeye” deformity with pain and weakness in supination. It also sets up discussion of proximal long head tendinopathy and tenosynovitis within the bicipital groove, a common pain generator in anterior shoulder complaints and a frequent consideration during arthroscopy and biceps tenodesis planning. A clean surface landmark. Use this artwork in musculoskeletal anatomy lectures, sports medicine and orthopedics teaching files, or surgical consent materials that need an external reference for biceps brachii location and contour in a male body habitus. It also reads well in fitness, rehabilitation, and kinesiology publications when paired with text on elbow flexion and forearm supination mechanics. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
