Presented in anterior anatomical position with the upper limbs slightly abducted, the torso exposes the transition from the parasternal chest wall to the lateral thoracic region along the anterior and midaxillary lines. Superficial landmarks include the sternum and costal margins anteriorly, with the curvature of the ribs becoming more prominent as the thorax rounds laterally toward the axilla. A blue lateral band overlies the outer chest, tracking the surface corridor where the serratus anterior and intercostal spaces sit deep to skin and subcutaneous tissue. Breast contour and the inframammary fold provide additional surface reference on the anterior thorax, tapering laterally toward the axillary tail. Clinically, this lateral thoracic corridor is where you plan access and avoid injury. Tube thoracostomy is commonly placed in the 4th or 5th intercostal space at or just anterior to the midaxillary line, a route chosen to enter the pleural cavity while respecting the neurovascular bundle that runs along the inferior margin of each rib and the long thoracic nerve coursing on the serratus anterior; injury here can produce scapular winging. Rib fractures and intercostal neuralgia also localize pain along these ribs and spaces, and the ability to relate surface contours to underlying costal levels helps when correlating physical exam findings with chest radiography or CT. Landmarks matter. Use this asset for thoracic wall teaching in gross anatomy and surface anatomy labs, for nursing and paramedic modules on chest tube positioning, and for patient-facing diagrams that need accurate body habitus representation in a Black adult female.
