Description

Framed in a lateral view of the facial skeleton, the animation isolates the zygomatic bone (malar bone) and tracks across its broad, quadrilateral lateral surface as it forms the cheek prominence. Along the superior margin, the zygomaticofrontal region is oriented toward the lateral orbital rim, while the posterior extension sweeps into the zygomatic process of the temporal bone to define the anterior part of the zygomatic arch. Anteriorly and inferiorly, the zygomaticomaxillary region meets the maxilla, with the bone’s convexity projecting laterally from the midface. Surface contours stay in constant relief as the camera movement clarifies which edges are superior, inferior, anterior, and posterior in anatomical position. Cheek contour is not cosmetic trivia. The zygomatic bone is a frequent site of midfacial fracture, and the animated lateral perspective helps you correlate visible external flattening with disruption at the zygomaticomaxillary buttress, the frontozygomatic suture, or the arch, patterns often grouped clinically as zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures. Sequential motion makes the spatial relationship to the lateral orbital rim and arch easier to teach than a single still, which can obscure how a depressed arch can impinge on the coronoid process during mandibular opening. Use this clip to support head and neck anatomy teaching (osteology of the viscerocranium), radiology correlation for facial trauma (lateral facial series and CT-based 3D reconstructions), or surgical education around reduction and fixation landmarks at the frontozygomatic region and zygomaticomaxillary buttress. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
