Description
Posterior surface anatomy of a male child is rendered with the integument made semi-transparent so the dorsal musculoskeletal layers and major viscera can be read together. Superficially, the trapezius spans from the external occipital protuberance and thoracic spinous processes to the scapular spine, while latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally toward the humerus, framing the paraspinal musculature that tracks along the vertebral column. Deep to the rib cage, the lungs occupy the posterolateral thorax with the heart sitting anteromedial to them, and the kidneys lie retroperitoneally on either side of the upper lumbar spine, inferior to the diaphragm and posterior to the abdominal organs. A posterior organ-oriented view matters because it matches how clinicians approach the back in real life: palpating spinous processes, orienting to the scapular medial border, and mentally mapping the pleura and kidneys beneath the ribs. It also clarifies why a penetrating injury below the 12th rib can threaten the upper pole of the kidney, and why posterior thoracic auscultation targets the lung fields away from the cardiac silhouette.
