Description
Anterior and posterior aspects of the adult female body are organized into standard surface anatomy regions, including the cephalic region (head) and cervical region (neck) superiorly, the thoracic region overlying the rib cage and breasts, and the abdominal and pelvic regions inferior to the costal margin. Laterally, the upper limb is partitioned into shoulder (deltoid region), brachium (arm), antebrachium (forearm), carpal region (wrist), manus (hand), and digits, while the lower limb is divided into gluteal and hip regions proximally, femoral region (thigh), patellar and popliteal regions around the knee, crural region (leg), tarsal region (ankle), and pes (foot). The dorsum is typically referenced by the scapular, vertebral, lumbar, and sacral regions, with medial and lateral descriptors anchoring symmetry across the midline. Clean regional boundaries. Regional anatomy is the language clinicians use to localize symptoms and document findings before any diagnosis is made, and it prevents ambiguity when pain, rash, or trauma crosses multiple compartments (for example, abdominal pain that localizes from periumbilical to right lower quadrant in suspected appendicitis). Breast and axillary regions carry added importance in women because lymphatic drainage patterns underpin the clinical exam for breast carcinoma, guide sentinel lymph node mapping, and frame surgical approaches in mastectomy and axillary dissection. Surface regions also align with common incision planning, dermatome teaching, and neurovascular compartment discussions in the limbs.
