Description
Shown from the side, the male anterolateral thoracic wall is defined by the sternum and costal cartilages anteriorly, the ribs and intercostal spaces laterally, and the contour of the pectoralis major as it approaches the anterior axillary fold. The costal margin arcs inferiorly from the xiphoid region toward the cartilages of ribs 7 to 10, while the clavicle sits superior to the first rib as a palpable landmark at the thoracic inlet. Along the lateral chest, the serrations of serratus anterior interdigitate with external oblique over the midaxillary region, and the anterior axillary line tracks vertically along the anterior axillary fold. Surface anatomy matters here. Clinically, this lateral surface view maps the intercostal spaces and costal cartilages used for chest tube placement and for local anesthetic deposition during intercostal nerve blocks, where the neurovascular bundle runs inferior to each rib within the costal groove. The anterior axillary line is a common reference for thoracostomy in the 4th or 5th intercostal space, and the rib and cartilage contours help prevent too medial a trajectory toward the internal thoracic vessels that course parasternal.
