Description
Running along the ulnar (medial) edge of the female antebrachium, the subcutaneous border of the ulna forms the dominant bony landmark from the olecranon proximally to the ulnar head and styloid process distally. Anterior to this border, the flexor carpi ulnaris occupies the medial superficial flexor compartment, with flexor digitorum superficialis lying more centrally and deeper flexor digitorum profundus attaching along the anterior and medial surfaces of the ulna. At the wrist, the flexor tendons converge toward the carpal tunnel radially, while the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon tracks to the pisiform on the ulnar side. Clear medial contour. This anterior, medial-border emphasis matters because the ulna’s subcutaneous edge is a reliable palpable reference during examination, casting, and operative planning, even when swelling obscures soft tissue contours. Ulnar-sided wrist pain often localizes near the distal ulna and ulnar styloid, where distal radioulnar joint instability, triangular fibrocartilage complex injury, or ulnar impaction can mimic more superficial tendinous pain from the flexor carpi ulnaris or pisotriquetral region. For regional anesthesia and vascular access teaching, the relationship between the medial flexor mass and the expected course of the ulnar neurovascular bundle becomes easier to conceptualize in this orientation, even when those deeper structures are not the focus. Common use cases include upper-limb anatomy labs, surface anatomy instruction for nursing and allied health, and orthopedic or sports medicine publications explaining ulnar-sided forearm and wrist landmarks, splint positioning, and incision planning along the medial forearm.
