Description
Centered within a transparent adult male torso, the alimentary tract runs from the cervical esophagus inferiorly through the thorax to the abdominal stomach, which sits predominantly in the left upper quadrant with its greater curvature facing inferiorly and laterally. Superior and to the right, the liver occupies the right hypochondrium, overlying the stomach and proximal duodenum and extending medially toward the epigastrium. Coiled jejunal and ileal loops fill the central abdomen, while the large intestine frames them peripherally as ascending colon on the right, transverse colon crossing the upper abdomen, descending colon on the left, and sigmoid colon curving into the pelvis. The rib cage, vertebral column, and bony pelvis anchor the organs in correct spatial context. A full-tract, x-ray style composition like this is the fastest way to teach topographic anatomy and peritoneal compartment relationships without the distraction of dissection planes.
