Description
Longitudinal collagen fiber bundles form the dominant axis of the ligament-like band, with rows of spindle-shaped fibroblasts (ligamentocytes) lying parallel to the tensile direction between densely packed type I collagen. A surrounding connective tissue sheath blends into the outer matrix, while the internal substance separates into smaller fascicle-like compartments that suggest an interfascicular region. At higher magnification, cylindrical profiles with concentric wrappings and a delicate internal mesh read more like nerve fascicles with perineurium and endoneurium than true ligament, which typically lacks perineurial lamellae and distinct axonal profiles. Mixed signals. That distinction matters when you are teaching or publishing musculoskeletal microanatomy. Ligament and tendon are both dense regular connective tissues, but their pathology and repair hinge on collagen crimp, fibroblast alignment, and the comparatively sparse vascular channels rather than on fascicular nerve organization; mislabeling a peripheral nerve cross section as ligament can derail explanations of sprain healing, graft remodeling in ACL reconstruction, or mucoid degeneration. The fascicle-within-fascicle architecture and layered sheaths in this artwork also map cleanly onto common entrapment and traction-injury discussions, where perineurium acts as a diffusion barrier and endoneurium is the compartment that swells in neurapraxia.
